Bye Bye Baby
By Janet Ahlberg & Allan Ahlberg
Publisher Little, Brown and Company
Poor baby! Life just isn't going well for this poor little baby who has no mommy. He has to change his own diaper and put himself to bed. The baby soon decides it is time for him to find a mommy, and so he sets out on a trek to find his very own mommy. Along the way he meets a cat, a teddy, a windup hen, and an old uncle asking each in turn if they will be his mommy. They all decline the offer, but decide to join the baby's retinue. A rainstorm hits and things get desperate, but finally they meet a mommy who is more than happy to be the baby's mommy. The whole crew settles in snuggly to live happily ever after, only to find that now the baby wants a daddy. Once again it's bye bye baby until the baby finds a daddy. At long last they all live happily ever after.
This book typifies what children like best in a book. Its subject matter is close to their lives. The absurdity of a baby changing his own diaper will not be lost on them. The book also uses repeated phrases which children will easily supply at the right moments on a second and third reading. And this is a book that children will want to have read and reread to them.
